The era of the "keyboard"

post-img

You sit behind a small screen, browsing through accounts and websites as you please. You communicate within a small village that contains many names, some of which may be within your circle, or you may only know them by the image that this virtual world has marketed to you. Through this screen, you pass judgments as you wish, building relationships and a broad network of acquaintances, without the slightest thought about the nature of this behavior. Will it transform into reality, or will it remain a stored illusion behind the screen's radiation?

Smartphones have isolated their users in a "cocoon," ending up detached from the world. Humans have become beings driven by the sound of notifications, swiftly moving toward the screen to contemplate a response, regardless of the moment the message arrived.

Just as smartphones have become our means of connecting with the world, they have also become the primary method of emotional connection and communication with our loved ones.

How difficult it is to remain fixated, completely surrendering to the screen of your phone, awaiting a message that may never come. How degrading it is to resort to dictionaries to decipher messages that do not adhere to any rules and are perhaps written in a mixture of Arabic and English.

Time passes slowly, and we gaze at the screen every second. We may check the internet connection repeatedly, then we begin reviewing the message, imagining various scenarios.

"Should I have added more elongated letters in this word to express my enthusiasm?" Then comes the dangerous phase: surely something catastrophic happened to her phone—it was stolen, or submerged, or perhaps it exploded. And the situation may escalate to "Surely something catastrophic happened to her personally—she was kidnapped, or drowned, or maybe she exploded," even though the actual answer may be much simpler: she doesn't want to respond.

With the dominance of technological advancement, which has taken hold of our thinking, we see how the entire set of standards has been overturned, relying entirely on social media. This has led us to adopt ideas and pass very easy judgments about the

people around us.
For example, not responding to an electronic message has become a predetermined idea, and many have attributed different meanings to delayed replies. Some perceive it as a form of ignoring or even arrogance, forgetting that we live in a real world filled with events and obligations, and often overlooking the fact that everyone has feelings, emotions, and circumstances. The person may not be in a psychological state that allows them to communicate or respond with a simple "amen" just because you wanted to talk to them.

A brief response is not necessarily based on imaginary foundations, pillars, ideas, or pretenses. The recipient may be in a situation that doesn't allow them to engage in a conversation or write poetic comments. It's not reasonable to build theories and imaginary assumptions based on such responses.

Technological advancements did not stop at a certain point; they created the digital environment and introduced the term "emojis." Emojis are innovative visual effects that have been popularized by social media platforms, and they serve as a means of alleviating the burden of sending lengthy texts that take a long time to formulate.

The emojis used in applications like WhatsApp and other platforms don't necessarily reflect the real state of an individual. One may be extremely excited but not proficient in expressing it with numerous words. This is what distinguishes the real world from the virtual world. Furthermore, one could be extremely sad to a degree that you can't imagine, but they send you a burst of laughter emojis as an expression of their emotions.

On the other hand, there is a phenomenon that has spread recently like an electronic epidemic, and that is the proliferation of offensive comments devoid of any shame or mercy. Some engage in cyberbullying, while others diminish the value of the other party. Some mistreat others as if they have passed judgment on them or possess a license to inquire about people's lives and evaluate them. In reality, this issue has psychological ramifications for both the judge and the recipient.

Passing prejudiced judgments from behind a pitiful keyboard on a person in real life can be utterly innocent. It is a ghost that devours you from behind the scenes, oblivious to the conflicts and struggles that arise within you because of a word you wrote. Each party throws their psychological and social baggage onto others.

In reality, the matter is significant and complex. Exchanging insults, for example, only reflects a miserable reality. Sadly, this reality is full of internal conflicts. Additionally, some insults stem from psychological disorders before they become physical. Such individuals are looking for an outlet to release their frustrations and turmoil, and when they find a platform to vent and affect others with the same ailment they suffer from, they do so without awareness.
