Amidst the escalating humanitarian crisis, Fabrizio Carboni, the director of the International Committee of the Red Cross, issued a stark warning stating that evacuating over a million civilians from Rafah, the city threatened by an Israeli ground attack, is "impossible." This warning comes in light of the tragic humanitarian conditions faced by the population and displaced people in Rafah.
Carboni pointed out that the extensive destruction caused by Israeli airstrikes makes it extremely difficult to identify a safe location for the transfer of civilians. He stressed that any military operation in Rafah would lead to catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
On the other hand, Jan Egeland, the Secretary-General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, confirmed that Rafah has become the world's largest displacement camp, and any attack on it would result in a dire situation. Egeland added that there is no safe place in Gaza if civilians were to leave Rafah.
In this context, Pentagon spokesperson Pat Rayd affirmed that there are currently no indications of any major ground operations commencing in Rafah. Meanwhile, Egypt reiterated its full rejection of an invasion of the city adjacent to its borders. These events indicate that the humanitarian crisis in Rafah may worsen in the coming days and weeks.
