The World Food Programme has announced one of its critical crises, warning of the suspension of food aid to Sudan, which threatens the lives of thousands. The famine crisis intensifies due to the lack of assistance, and hopes of saving lives at risk are diminishing.
In the displacement areas of Darfur, Chad, and South Sudan, Sudanese refugees and internally displaced persons suffer from a shortage of food rations. Estimates indicate that the available quantities are not sufficient to feed many of them, including innocent children who suffer more than others.
Despite the efforts made by UN agencies, they face difficulties in securing food for all those in need in Sudan due to ongoing armed conflict and continuous funding shortages. This tragic situation leaves many people, including innocent children, suffering from hunger and lacking complete meals.
Pierre Honoreat, the Country Director of the World Food Programme in Chad, confirmed that the organization has been forced to reduce its operations to unprecedented levels, putting those in need of food on the brink of disaster. Honoreat stressed the urgent need for donors to prevent the situation from turning into a comprehensive catastrophe.
With declining funding, the food supply route from Chad to the Darfur region in Sudan is also at risk. Urgent appeals from the program for $242 million in funding aim to strengthen food stocks before the rainy season, which cuts off supplies to refugees in Chad due to rising river levels.
