Dogs Leaving Koreans' Tables

Dog meat has been a major part and "delicious" dish in Korean cuisine for centuries, with the country believed to have consumed about one and a half million dogs annually.

It seems that South Korea has started to reconsider this strange dietary habit that is "disgusting" to many other nations. The Korean parliament's decision to ban dog meat consumption is an option the country has chosen to avoid international embarrassment it has faced.

The National Assembly approved the bill by a majority of 208 votes, and the proposed legislation will become law after approval by the Cabinet and President Yoon Suk-yeol's signature.

Under the new legislation, breeding, slaughtering dogs for consumption, and distributing or selling dog meat will be banned starting 2027, and those who slaughter dogs will face prison sentences ranging from two to three years, or fines of up to 30 million won ($22,768).

Strangely, efforts to ban dog meat consumption have faced fierce resistance from farmers and others working in the dog meat industry, which is declining in popularity in the country
