Artificial intelligence fraud

Cybersecurity agencies around the world are on alert, warning of a growing wave of deep fraud operations targeting millions of dollars from companies, and exploiting artificial intelligence to achieve their fraudulent goals.

According to the chief information and security officer at cybersecurity company Netskope, such threats have increased as a result of the popularization of Open AI's ChatGPT - which launched in 2022 - which quickly pushed generative AI technology into the mainstream.

A deepfake is a video, audio, or photo of a real person that has been digitally altered and manipulated, often through artificial intelligence, to convincingly defraud.

According to local Chinese media, a financial employee in the Chinese city of Hong Kong was tricked into transferring more than $25 million to fraudsters using deep fake technology, who disguised themselves as colleagues in a video call.

In this context, the British engineering company Arup confirmed to CNBC that it is the company responsible in this case, but it was unable to go into details about this matter due to the ongoing investigation.
