In a groundbreaking surgical intervention in the country, Jordanian doctors at the neurosurgery department of Prince Hamzah Hospital in the capital, Amman, performed a brain tumor removal surgery on a 20-year-old patient without general anesthesia.
Regarding this matter, the head of the neurosurgery department at the hospital explained that the operation lasted for 6 hours, adding that the patient was fully awake and suffering from stubborn seizures.
The department head also explained that the idea behind keeping the patient awake was to instruct him to perform specific tasks during the operation to ensure the safety of the sensitive functions near the tumor site.
Interestingly, the patient was able to make a video call to his family in the middle of the surgery to give him a dose of optimism.
It is worth mentioning that this type of operation is performed to treat patients who have tumors near sensitive centers in the brain, such as the speech and comprehension center.
These operations aim to keep the patient awake and able to cooperate with the medical team by continuously communicating with them during the removal of the brain tumor, in order to avoid complications such as speech lossand comprehension difficulties.
