The potato market in Damascus is experiencing instability, which has become the norm for Syrian citizens. Despite price fluctuations, potatoes have maintained their cost.
Potatoes are a staple food for Syrians, and their prices have reached 11,000 Syrian pounds for regular potatoes and 9,000 Syrian pounds for refrigerated potatoes.
Abdul Razzaq Habza, the Secretary-General of the Consumer Protection Association in Damascus and an economic analyst, confirmed that potato prices are rising due to limited supply by traders who control the prices. If the Syrian Trading Establishment were to import potatoes, they could offer them at a lower price within the markets.
Habza believes that importers and traders have maintained high prices through limited supply and monopolization. Additionally, the scarcity of autumn crop production has contributed to the rise in potato prices. The increased demand after Ramadan and Eid holidays has also led to higher vegetable prices.
