In the heart of the Syrian capital, Damascus, the date markets are witnessing transformations that make them the center of attention for consumers. Before the arrival of the blessed month Ramadan, prices of some date varieties have reached their peak, with the price per kilogram reaching 200,000 Syrian pounds!
The increase in demand for dates in the winter season is expected, but it multiplies significantly during the month of Ramadan, as this natural fruit is considered a symbol of traditions and religious culture. Consequently, traders are forced to stock large quantities of dates in preparation for the surge in demand during this blessed month. It is worth noting that dates are easy to store and have a long shelf life.
However, there are also various types of unknown source dates present in the markets. These are dates that do not bear any brand marks or identification cards. Despite this, some people prefer to choose from among these luxurious varieties, which can reach a value of 200,000 Syrian pounds per kilogram, and are considered exclusive to a specific segment of consumers who seek quality and distinction. Meanwhile, low-priced dates remain a suitable choice for the middle class, as they offer a delicious taste at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, the poor have forgotten the taste of luxurious dates for years.
On the other hand, quantities of low-quality dates, known as "fallen dates," are being smuggled. These are dates that are thrown on the ground and covered in soil and sand, through irregular methods without any origin cards. They are traded in unhealthy conditions, exposed to air, sunlight, and moisture, leading to their deterioration and decay.
Moreover, the matter does not stop there. These spoiled dates are ground and used in the production of powdered dates. They are mixed with water and flavored before being packed in nylon bags and sold to sweet shops. These issues raise consumers' concerns about the quality and purity of the products they purchase.
Looking at the prices, date prices have witnessed a tremendous increase of 200% during the past year, reflecting the high demand and challenges facing the date industry in Syria in general.
