Electricity bill soars

post-img

as the Syrian gets used to sudden recommendations and nightly decisions that have become an important part of his "happy" nightlife. The latest was a new proposal to raise electricity tariffs for household use, with the usual justification of "economic deficit."

The proposal claimed that the new tariff would be less than the cost and the sale of electricity for household use would remain subsidized. The study comes in the "framework of tariff correction," which the Ministry of Electricity confirms is a "social tariff that is not linked to cost value."

The rise in tariffs is attributed to the decline in the revenues of the electricity sector and the increase in expenditures and costs of producing electrical energy. Therefore, tariff corrections were necessary to maintain the ability of the electricity sector to continue providing its services, especially with regard to implementing important projects, maintenance and repair works.

It is noted that the percentage of household electricity consumers exceeds 80%, compared to about 10% of industrial subscribers in cities and industrial areas who consume electricity according to subscriptions exempted from rationing.

The Ministry of Electricity recently raised the price of selling the kilowatt-hour for electricity consumption by major consumers from the public and private sectors who are fully or partially exempted from rationalizing electricity consumption. This decision did not include household electricity consumption. The ministry set the tariff for electricity consumption for lines exempted from rationalization for household, industrial, craft, commercial and tourist uses at 1,900 Syrian pounds per kilowatt-hour for the full consumed amount, after the tariff was 950 Syrian pounds per kilowatt-hour. The tariff for electricity consumption for drinking water pumping stations, wastewater treatment plants, public hospitals and facilities affiliated with the Center for Scientific Studies and Research has been set at 900 Syrian pounds per kilowatt-hour.

Ironically, the Syrian has forgotten the existence of electricity in his day and has adapted to its almost complete interruption. So why this "qualitative" decision?
