Students at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland and the University of Lausanne in Switzerland organized two sit-ins to protest the Israeli war in Gaza, joining a wave of demonstrations currently sweeping American universities.
In Dublin, students set up tents on Friday, forcing the university to restrict entry to the campus on Saturday and close the Book of Kells exhibition, one of the most important tourist attractions in Ireland.
The protest camp was established after the student union said that the university had imposed a fine of $230,000 on it due to losses incurred as a result of protests in the past few months that were not only related to the war in Gaza.
The protesters demand that Trinity College cut academic ties with Israel and withdraw its investments from companies with ties to Israel.
Student Union President Laszlo Molnarvia posted a photo of stacked chairs at the entrance to the building that houses the “Book of Kells” exhibition.
At the Swiss University of Lausanne, about 100 students took control of a building and presented several demands, including ending scientific cooperation with Israel.
One protester told Swiss television on Saturday: “The Palestinians have been dying for more than 200 days, but no one hears us.”
"Now there is a global movement to push governments to take action, but this is not happening. That is why we want to get universities involved now," he added.
The university stated that it may allow students to remain in the building until Monday, provided that this does not disrupt work on campus.
