Despite the limited spread of herbal medicine, many women use remedies like aloe vera or cucumber slices around the eyes. However, it was astonishing when individuals witnessed an orangutan treating its face with plants.
An orangutan was observed rubbing medicinal plants on its wounds and treating an open wound on its face using crushed leaves and sap from a known plant.
According to Axios, researchers explained that the wound healed within five days.
The researchers confirmed that the plant the orangutan used to rub on its skin possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is part of the traditional medicinal repertoire in the region spanning from China to Southeast Asia.
In one of the parks in Indonesia, scientists discovered a male wild orangutan that was the first animal observed self-medicating with plants in a similar manner.
Scientists also noted that this animal was seen resting more than usual, which may aid in wound healing.
