The Berlin government has offered to relinquish the villa of Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda minister, in the hopes of resolving a decades-long debate about whether the abandoned and dilapidated site should be repurposed or demolished in the rural outskirts of northern Germany.
Berlin's finance minister, Stefan Evers, announced the offer of the villa to anyone interested in owning the property, with the state giving it away as a gift.
Berlin has repeatedly tried to hand over the site to responsible authorities instead of continuing to bear the costs of maintenance and security for the deteriorating building.
Evers added, "If this attempt fails, demolition will be the only solution left for the authorities."
It is worth mentioning that Goebbels returned to Berlin towards the end of World War II and committed suicide with his wife and their children using cyanide capsules in Hitler's bunker as the Soviet forces approached.
