The Contaminated Blood Scandal in the UK

Recently, the curtain was lifted on medical experiments conducted on children in the UK during the 1970s and 1980s, where contaminated blood products were used.

Documents have revealed a secret world of unsafe clinical trials involving children in the United Kingdom, where doctors prioritized research goals over the needs of patients.

These experiments lasted for over 15 years and involved hundreds of individuals, most of whom were infected with Hepatitis C and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) as a result. Many surviving patients have described being treated as "experimental rats" in laboratories.

The experiments included children suffering from blood clotting disorders, and often their families did not consent to their participation. The majority of the children enrolled in these trials passed away.

The documents also show that doctors at hemophilia centers throughout the country used blood products despite being aware of the potential contamination due to the donors' diseases and viruses.

Accounts suggest that the shortage of blood products in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s led to imports from the United States, where donors belonging to higher-risk groups, such as prisoners and drug addicts, provided their plasma for testing.

It is known that this particular category of donors could be infected with deadly viruses, including Hepatitis C, which attacks the liver and leads to liver cirrhosis and cancer, as well as Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

One of the blood products, known as Factor VIII, was considered highly effective in stopping bleeding but was also widely known to be contaminated with viruses.
